We recently had the honour of attending a Battle of Jutland centenary lunch with our strategic partners State 21.
Our Managing Director Malcolm Parrott and Director of Business Strategy and Partner Les Chapman were among 100 guests at the Naval & Military Club (also known as the In & Out Club), including the past First Sea Lord, Lord Alan West.
The speaker was Nick Jellicoe, grandson of the British commander-in-chief at Jutland, Admiral Sir John Jellicoe.

Our Managing Partner in the United States has been appointed to a committee of a highly influential maritime organization in the United States.
William (Bill) Anonsen, who is Managing Partner/Principal of TMG Pacific, has joined the Merchant Marine Affairs Committee of the Navy League of the U.S.
Bill, who is a Lifetime Member of the Navy League, was welcomed by committee Chairman Jonathan D. Kaskin.
The Navy League of the U.S. was founded in 1902 and provides a powerful voice in favor of strong sea services from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S.-flag Merchant Marine. Bill stressed the continued importance of merchant mariners and our marine transportation system.
“Today and in the future, as in the past, we depend on our maritime services to help ensure our security, promote and protect our prosperity, and advance the universal hope of freedom.“

Tributes have been paid following the passing of one of our leading lights.
Captain George Brook Johnson, who was Managing Partner and Principal at The Maritime Group Ltd (TMG), crossed the bar after a long fight against cancer.
Capt Johnson, who was TMG’s representative for Australasia, spent 49 years at sea after graduating as a cadet from the New Zealand Shipping Company in 1961.
Malcolm Parrott, who is TMG Managing Director and Executive Vice-President, said: “All at TMG are deeply saddened by Brook’s death and our sincerest sympathies go to his family."
Capt John M Cox, TMG President, said: “Brook was an extremely valuable and very popular member of the TMG team.
“He played a pivotal role in making TMG the success it is today and will be very sorely missed by all and I am deeply upset by his passing.”
Bill Anonsen, Managing Director of TMG Pacific, added: “Brook will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched both professionally and personally."
John W Bussell, lately TMG representative and Managing Partner in Singapore but now attached to TMG Europe in London, said: “I am sure Brook will be deeply missed within the shipping community where he was respected and more especially by his family.”
All at TMG send our condolences to Brook's wife Anne and family at their home in Brisbane, Australia.
The Maritime Group is very saddened to report that its representative in Australia, George Brook Johnson, crossed the bar last Saturday evening after a long fight against cancer.
Brook was a very good shipmate and long time friend of our European Managing Director and International Executive Vice President Malcolm Parrott.
They were cadets together in the New Zealand Shipping Company, serving in the cadet training ship MV Otaio and going to sea on the same day.
The thoughts and condolences of all at TMG are with Brook's family and friends at this sad time.
Congratulations to US Coast Guard (USCG) Rear Admiral Cari Thomas and distinguished commercial maritime professional Carleen Lyden-Kluss on becoming International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Ambassadors.
Both were nominated by the USCG. Bill Anonsen, Hawaii-based managing director of TMG Pacific, personally congratulated Cari and Carleen on their appointments and hailed their ‘years of experience and contributions’ to the global maritime community and ‘unique skill sets as influential industry role models’.
He described both as ‘great assets’ to our maritime community and a welcome addition to IMO as Ambassadors.

One of The Maritime Group’s important strategic partners has made a member of its transport planning team a Partner. Dougie McDonald will oversee operations in development and infrastructure consultancy Peter Brett Associates’ (PBA) offices in Scotland Dougie joined PBA as a Director of Transport Planning in May 2014 from Systra, and became an Equity Director in January 2015.
TMG was previously closely allied to Systra but with the Scottish team leaving and joining PBA, TMG followed suit and aligned itself up with PBA, building up a strong business relationship and rapport.
We are carrying out a great deal of work with PBA, including Scottish Transport Appraisal Guidance (STAG) projects in Scotland. Congratulations on your appointment from all in TMG, Dougie; we are all looking forward to working closely with you.
The Maritime Group (TMG) Pacific is providing support as a legendary voyaging canoe crosses the Atlantic on the next leg of her epic circumnavigation of the globe.
It is helping to provide logistics support for the iconic Hōkūleʻa on her 50,000 mile odyssey around the world and her safety escort vessel, Gershon II.
Hōkūleʻa has set sail from Cape Town in South Africa for a voyage of 2,400 nautical miles to Brazil as she reaches the mid- point of her historic Mālama Honua expedition.
As a global consultancy, TMG has the capability to help arrange for the critical logistical support/supplies, provide nautical/weather routing guidance, assist with arrangements with port agents and officials, and ensure the safety of the craft and crew worldwide for the Polynesian Voyaging Society.
TMG founder Capt John M Cox III has been honoured with two prestigious awards.
He was recently recognised with a Distinguished Alumni Award by the California Maritime Academy. In a separate accolade he was named Maritime Person of the Year by the Pacific North West Chapter of the Council of American Master Mariners (CAMM).
Capt Cox, who is President of The Maritime Group, Inc., and Chairman of The Maritime Group (International) Ltd, said: “It is a tremendous honour to be recognised by my fellow mariners and peers in such a wonderful way.”

The Maritime Group (International) Limited of London has been contracted since July 2015 by maritime solicitors Holman Fenwick Willan LLP (HFW) to provide an expert witness service and maritime advice. HFW is an international law firm headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It specializes in international commerce, acting predominantly for airlines, shipping firms and insurers.
TMG joins partners Peter Brett Associates LLP and Beckett Rankine Limited plus others to carry out a comprehensive study on the ports, harbors, airports, ferry services, air services, ships and airplanes for the Shetland Island Council in the offshore islands of Shetland north of Scotland. Initially the study will complete stages 1 & 2 by end of February 2016 and will then move to stage 3 to be completed by end July 2016.
TMG are pleased to announce that they have been contracted by Serco Limited of London to assist in their bid for the Clyde and Hebrides Ferry services (CHFS) contract, currently operated by David MacBrayne Limited of Glasgow under the trading name of CalMac Ferries. The Contract will be awarded in Spring 2016 with a start-up date of 1st October 2016.
TMG will be involved professionally in a large part of the bid team and concentrate of ships and harbours; though will assist with other parts of the bid as needed. Transport Scotland has issued a draft Invitation to Tender to two bidders; the incumbent company David MacBrayne Limited and Serco Caledonian Ferries Ltd of Glasgow.
CalMac Ferries currently operate 32 ferries owned by CMAL (Caledonian Marine Assets Limited, a wholly owned Scottish Government company) on some 22 routes to approximately 50 ports.
TMG are very pleased to be working for Serco again, especially with teams whom they have worked with before. TMG look forward to providing a first class service to Serco over the coming months.

The Maritime Group (International) Ltd, based in London, has commenced the process of ISO 9001-2008 accreditation by successfully completing the creation of its Quality Manual, which has been accepted at the first submission by certification agency QMS International.
Andrew D Crisp, who has recently joined the UK team as a Principal Consultant, has been instrumental in coordinating the creation of the Manual and will go on to ensure full implementation and certification in the coming weeks.

TMG Asia leaped in to help UNI (Universal Network Intelligence) of Malaysia when they required as a matter of urgency a lecturer to carry out a tanker vetting course in Bangkok Thailand in mid April. Our John W Bussell, Director of The Maritime Group Asia and Director of TMG holding company J B Inspections Pty Ltd of Singapore, who is an accredited vetting surveyor and SIRE auditor has completed seminars on the subject matter many times, acting together with Captain Sanjiv Seghals of Mumbai.

We have recorded our busiest ever 12 months after a complete restructuring of the business in early 2014.

Former nuclear submarine commander Les Chapman has joined TMG as our new Director of Strategy.
Les comes to TMG from Reynolds Technological Inquires Ltd, an accident investigation and forensic engineering consultancy, after six and a half years as its Chief Operating Officer (COO).

TMG together with their strategic partners Systra (ex MVA) who will be leading the project, have today won a short contract to peer review the Jurassic Coast Marine Link Project for Dorset County Council. The Dorset and East Devon Coast, popularly known as the Jurassic Coast, is England’s first natural World Heritage site. It was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in December 2001. The site includes 95 miles (155 Km) of unspoilt cliffs and beaches from the westerly position of Orcombe Point, Exmouth in East Devon, to Studland Bay in Dorset. TMG Europe in association with Strategic Networking Partners and Consulting, a Mauritius consulting firm, has won the contract to provide the Government of Mauritius (Ministry of Public Infrastructure, National Development Unit, Land Transport and Shipping) with consultancy services for the "Feasibility Study for the Replacement of the M/S Mauritius Pride and Consideration of Related issues". The contract was won against stiff opposition from large international consultancy firms. We look forward to working with our clients and Mauritian partners in this new venture.

Captain Jan D Burgess, Master Mariner, MNI, will be joining TMG as a Senior Associate Consultant/Director of Strategy and will be working closely with TMG Europe over the next 12 months to assist in company strategy, governance and marketing, to move the company forward. He comes with an immaculate pedigree in these subjects, having been a senior manager at Serco Marine (a division of Serco Ltd) from which he retired this summer.
Ms Margaret Stewart has joined TMG as an associate. She is a qualified retired chartered accountant having worked for many years with the London based Institute of Engineers. Although having no experience with shipping, she is very familiar with many nautical terms as she was closely involved in accounting for the off shore industry in the North Sea.

TMG have partnered with MVA Consultancy of Edinburgh to carry out a six month study of the Upper Clyde Ferry routes, notably between Gourock and Dunoon. TMG/MVA will be looking at all aspects of the current services and offering possible solutions and improvements.

Serco was assisted in the transition after their sucessful bid of Northlink Ferries by TMG being part of the transition team. The transition was successfully completed in the afternoon of 5th July 2012 and will now operate under the name of Serco Northlink Ferries. TMG will continue to assist the new managemnet team over the coming months with the operation.

TMG and Beckett Rankine held suuceesful workshop road shows for the Gulf of Cambay Ferry Project in Mumbai and London during June. The workshops were well attended by International ferry operators with well over 100 delegates at the Mumbai show and over 60 at the London show.

Serco Ltd emerged as the preferred bidder for the Northlink Ferry services betweeen mainland Scotland and the northern isles of Shetland and Orkney, after an announcement was made by the Scottish Government Minister for Transport on Friday afternoon (4th May 2012). The Maritime Group Europe was an integral part of the Bid Team effort over the months of December 2011, January, February and March 2012, after being contracted to assist Serco in their bid to secure the Northlink Ferries contract. The Maritime Group will continue to play an integral part of the Serco transition team for start-up of the new contract and beyond. The Maritime Group has considerable expertise and experience in the operation of ferries throughout the world, including executive, senior management, operational and sea positions in major ferry operators, such as Sea Containers Ferries and Ports Limited, Sealink UK Limited, Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Limited, P&O, Hoverspeed, Silja Line SA and Black Ball Ferry Line, Inc.

Black Ball Ferry Line announced that the company’s current executive management team (CEO Captain John M Cox President and Chairman The Maritime Group (International) has agreed to purchase the company from the Oregon State University Foundation.

The Maritime Group Europe has been contracted to assist one of the selected bidders in their efforts to secure the Northlink Ferries contract. Northlink Ferries operate a passenger and freight service between mainland Scotland and the islands of Orkney and Shetlands.
